Upcoming Release: Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

Hardcover: 336 pages
Publisher:
Hyperion Book CH (March 2, 2010)

Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.

By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.

As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

Book Review: Slave (The Cat Star Chronicles) by Cheryl Brooks

Mass Market Paperback: 320 pages
Publisher:
Sourcebooks Casablanca (April 1, 2008)

"I found him in the slave market on Orpheseus Prime, and even on such a god-forsaken planet as that one, their treatment of him seemed extreme."

He may be the last of a species whose sexual talents were the envy of the galaxy.

Cat is an enslaved warrior from a race with a feline gene that gives him awesome beauty, fearsome strength, and sensuality and sexual prowess unmatched by any other males in the universe. Even filthy, chained, and beaten, he gives off an aura of power and virility and his feline gene gives him a special aura.

Jacinth is an intergalactic trader on a rescue mission and she needs a man she can trust with her life.

She has spent years pursuing her kidnapped sister from planet to planet. Now her quest leads her to a place where all the women are slaves. "Jack" needs a slave of her own-one who can masquerade as her master.

Enmeshed in a tangle of deception, lust, and love, they must elude a race of violent killers and together forge a bond stronger than any chains.

Jacinth has been on a mission to rescue her sister for 6 years. She has finally caught up but the planet her sister is on is not one she can go to alone. Women are chained to the men (in fact, it is illegal for the men to NOT have a woman chained to him) and they are scantily clad. The men wear open shirts and pants that have a hole at the crotch to display their manhood (seriously). Jacinth needs a man she can trust to act as her owner because the only way she can look for her sister on the planet is if she goes as a slave.
She finds Cat (not his real name, it is her nickname for him) on a stinky planet at a slave auction. She ends up buying him and he agrees to help her out. He is not human, his species is like a hybrid of human and feline. Of course they hit it off and love each other. Things get a little kinky once they get to the planet.
Overall, the book was decent. I did roll my eyes a lot at Jacinth when she would say things like "Gee Whiz" or when she is coming on to Cat by calling him her big strong, brave, sexy Tomcat.....it was just a bit much. Cheesy and very unsexy. Not to say that there were no sexy parts, because there were...it's just that the author occasionally turned the mood (unintentionally I am sure) from hot and sexy to laughfest. The book was a quick read with adventure, sex, and some action. Decent enough that I would read the next one in the series just to see if the writing is a little better.

Book Review: Happy Hour of the Damned by Mark Henry

  • Paperback: 336 pages
  • Publisher: Kensington; Reprint edition (February 1, 2010)
Alive, ad exec Amanda Feral worked hard to wring enjoyment out of her days. Now that she's a zombie, it's a different story. Turns out, Seattle is home to glamorous undead of every description, and Amanda - stylish and impeccably groomed even in the afterlife - is swigging cocktails and living large (so to speak) among its elite. But there are downsides. Not being able to stomach anything except alcohol and human flesh, for instance. And the fact that someone is targeting Seattle's otherworldly inhabitants for their own sinister reasons. Preying on the undead is seriously uncool. The only option is for Amanda and her zombie BFF Wendy and gorgeous gay vampire pal Gil to unearth the culprit among the legions of Seattle's bloodsuckers, shapeshifters, reapers, succubi, and demons - before they all meet a fate a lot worse than death...

WARNING: If your sensibilities are easily offended then I suggest you not read this book. Of course, you will be missing out on one ridiculously hilarious book. So take my suggestion and suck it up and read Happy Hour of the Damned.
So, Amanda Feral is turned zombie, makes some friends, learns the ins and outs of zombie life...err unlife, pisses of some scary creatures, thwarts some evil plans, and all while looking hot.

My friend is a zombie fanatic but he only reads graphic novels....hand him a book and he will just look at you like you have lost your mind. I just finished reading Happy Hour of the Damned and since I knew he wouldn't read it I forced him to listen to me talk about it so he wouldn't miss out on the zombie goodness. He laughed at parts and appreciated certain aspects of it (for instance, the reapers), but then he said, "I hate zombies like that though. They shouldn't be intelligent and move fast." Blah blah blah blah....somewhere in the middle of the droning I remembered one the the most interesting ideas of the book. There are basically 2 types of zombies; zombies that are made and zombies that are "mistakes". A zombie can only be made by a zombie who has the breath...which is really rare. They inhale (or rather I think it is more like eating) the breath and then whenever they end up dying they become a zombie. A "mistake" zombie can be made by any zombie from a bite or scratch. THEY are the crazed zombies who just mindlessly consume and destroy. SO, I remedied my mistake and explained this to my friend. His response, "Oh, okay, well that's interesting." Heh. It is.
There is sex, people eating, lots of dirty words (the word Poon was used quite often lol), and a wide variety of paranormal creatures. I highly recommend this book and if you go out and buy it you can help save Amanda Feral. There are 3 books in this series, but if the re-release of Happy Hour of the Damned doesn't sell enough in MMPB then there won't be any more Amanda Feral books :(

Book Review: Steamed: A Steampunk Romance by Katie MacAlister

  • Paperback: 352 pages
  • Publisher: Signet; Original edition (February 2, 2010)
When one of Jack Fletcher's nanoelectromechanical system experiments is jostled in his lab, the resulting explosion sends him into the world of his favorite novel-a seemingly Victorian-era world of steampower, aether guns, corsets, and goggles. A world where the lovely and intrepid Octavia Pye captains her airship straight into his heart...

The story begins with Jack, who is a nanoelectrical systems engineer, and his sister Hallie hanging out in Jack's lab when there is some sort of freak accident that transports them to an alternate universe. They find themselves on an airship under the command of Captain Octavia Pye. Hallie gets arrested and will be hanged in honor of the emperor's wedding. Sparks fly between Jack and Octavia and they embark on a rescue mission to save Hallie.

Reviews/Ratings for this book seem to vary but I truly enjoyed this book. Quite a few people believed it was not Steampunk enough...to each their own. I thought it was Steampunk enough. The romance between Jack and Octavia was fun to watch, mostly because of the battle for dominance they seemed to have going on. The crew was intriguing. There wasn't much focus on them, so hopefully there will be more about them in the books to follow. The only character I felt disconnected with was Hallie, Jack's sister. I am going to chalk that up to the fact that she gets arrested early on so she really isn't in the book much.

Official Release Day of Pleasure of a Dark Prince by Kresley Cole

Mass Market Paperback: 448 pages
Publisher: Pocket; Original edition (February 16, 2010)

A DANGEROUS BEAUTY...
Lucia the Huntress: as mysterious as she is exquisite, she harbors secrets that threaten to destroy her -- and those she loves.

AN UNCONTROLLABLE NEED...

Garreth MacRieve, Prince of the Lykae: the brutal Highland warrior who burns to finally claim this maddeningly sensual creature as his own.

THAT LEAD TO A PLEASURE SO WICKED....

From the shadows, Garreth has long watched over Lucia. Now, the only way to keep the proud huntress safe from harm is to convince her to accept him as her guardian. To do this, Garreth will ruthlessly exploit Lucia's greatest weakness -- her wanton desire for him.

This book is the latest in Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series (which is one of my favorite series ever along with Gena Showalter's Lords of the Underworld series). I only recently discovered the series but I was hooked fast. I read all of the books in only 3-4 days. They were just too good to put down. I am so excited to read this newest book. Hopefully my wait won't be too long because I have a copy coming to me in the mail.

Linger by Maggie Stiefvater

Linger Cover LargeIn Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other. Now, in Linger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past . . . and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack. And Isabelle, who already lost her brother to the wolves . . . and is nonetheless drawn to Cole.

At turns harrowing and euphoric, Linger is a spellbinding love story that explores both sides of love -- the light and the dark, the warm and the cold -- in a way you will never forget.

What to say, what to say....

I am a person who HAS to finish a book once I have picked it up...even if I hate it. Today the unthinkable happened. I have given up on a book. I have been reading this book for maybe 4 days (or more) and I have only made it 152 pages in. I have finally admitted defeat...I just can't subject myself to this book anymore. What book am I talking about? Bran Hambric: The Farfield Curse by Kaleb Nation. I can't really give a review since I didn't finish but I do have some things I have to say:

It is not unusual for authors to borrow ideas from each others work, but come on...seriously? There are so many blatant rip offs of Harry Potter in the book. I knew going in that it was going to be Harry Potter-esque and I was okay with that...even looking forward to it. But this goes beyond that and it ruined the book for me. The plot moves sooooooo sloooooooowly. 152 pages in and not much has happened and I feel no connection with any of the characters. I could go on with more but I don't want it to turn into more of a free for all bashing. I mean, maybe it gets good..eventually? I don't know....I DO know that I have read some terrible books so it speaks volumes that I couldn't even force myself to read it. This makes me sad....

Book Review: The Mermaid's Madness by Jim C. Hines

Paperback: 352 pages
Publisher: DAW (October 6, 2009)

There is an old story-you might have heard it-about a young mermaid, the daughter of a king, who saved the life of a human prince and fell in love. So innocent was her love, so pure her devotion, that she would pay any price for the chance to be with her prince. She gave up her voice, her family, and the sea, and became human. But the prince fell in love with another woman. The tales say the little mermaid sacrificed her own life so that her beloved prince could find happiness with his bride. The tales lie.
If you want to know the real story, a tale not of unrequited love and noble sacrifice but one of madness, murder, and magic gone awry, Danielle, Talia, and Snow-a.k.a. Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White-are three princesses who can tell you what really happened. They were there when everything fell apart, and unthinkable tragedy struck the kingdom of Lorindar. And they were the only ones who stood a chance of setting things right, not only for Queen Bea and Lorindar, but for the merfolk as well...

This is the second book in the Princess novels by Jim C. Hines and it is a story about a mermaid, Lirea, who has gone mad and killed her father the king and her older sister, and now she is out to kill her younger sister Lannidae out of revenge. It is a very unique take on the fairy tale of the Little Mermaid but it is easy to spot some resemblances throughout. There is a lot of magic, fighting, soul sucking, shape shifting, and life saving. There is even a ship that heals itself. All in all a very interesting read. Although you could probably get away with reading this book without reading the first one in the series I would not recommend it. I think there would be too many small details that would be confusing.
I actually enjoyed this book more than the first book. It had a much faster pace with a lot more action.

My Bookshelves and a few creations

I figured since I busted out the camera to do the book shelf review I would go ahead and document what ALL my bookshelves look like for you guys. I have 4 bookshelves (I actually have a shelf not pictured of just some cookbooks/craft books...but it is only one shelf so I didn't bother with it). Everything is alphabetized by author, otherwise it would take forever to find the book I want hehe. On the tall black shelf if you squint you can see some little dudes I made out of perler beads...they are Street Fighters! I made Chun Li, Dhalsim, E. Honda, Blanka, Guile, and Zangief. I also have a Digimon (he is Gatomon)...cuz I am a dork and used to love that cartoon. I have some other things in the pic that I made in ceramics class way back when...like that orange dragon and GIR from Invader Zim (if you can spot him). My bookshelves pretty much take up that entire wall....I'm running out of room!!! Watch out for a future post where I torture you with all my perler creations just because I can muahaahahaa!

p.s. I am not the original mastermind behind these particular perlers...I can't remember who originally did them so I can give props to the artist, I just recreated them is all.

CSN Stores Book Shelf Review

I was contacted by a representative of CSNstores.com recently to review one of their products. I happened to desperately need a book shelf. For the past few months I have resorted to stacking piles of books on the floor which has resulted in many avalanches of books. So anyways, I requested to review the book shelf in the picture above. It is the ORE 4 Tier Book Shelf in Black. I loved the way it looked and figured since it is metal it would be sturdy enough for my heavier tomes. I received the shelf very quickly and commenced putting it together (by myself I might add). It does not come with step by step instructions, it comes with a diagram...which is all you will need because it is ridiculously simple to put it together. Oh, and you don't need any tools because it comes with an allen wrench (for those that don't know it is a little metal tool in the shape of an L and works kind of like a screw driver). I would say it took me about 15-30 minutes to put together. I am VERY pleased with the book shelf. It is lightweight, yet sturdy enough to hold a lot books without bowing under the weight. If you are in the market for a book shelf I definitely recommend this one.
This is a pic of the book shelf with my books on it...so pretty :) Notice no bowing, YAY! I would like to thank Jason and CSN Stores for the opportunity to review this beauty

By the way, did you know they have over 200 CSN Stores? There is something for everybody there.

I received this item for review, however, any opinions expressed are my own and have not been influenced by another in any way

The Stepsister Scheme by Jim C. Hines

Paperback: 352 pages
Publisher: DAW (January 6, 2009)

What would happen if an author went back to the darker themes of the original fairy tales for his plots, and then crossed the Disney princesses with Charlie’s Angels? What’s delivered is The Stepsister Scheme—a whole new take on what happened to Cinderella and her prince after the wedding. And with Jim C. Hines penning the tale readers can bet it won’t be “and they lived happily ever after.”

This book is full of adventure, magic, and girls who kick ass. These Princesses aren't to be confused with their Disney versions. The story's focus is on Princess Danielle AKA Cinderella. Her husband Prince Armand is kidnapped and put under a spell by Cinderella's evil stepsisters. Her mission is to make it to Fairytown to rescue her love with the aid of her two friends Talia (Sleeping Beauty) and Snow (Snow White....obviously).

There are a couple of twists in the story that keep it from being boring and although I felt that it had a slow start it picked up in the end. What I find very interesting is that the story begins AFTER the fairy tale portion....Cinderella has already married her prince and is supposed to be living happily ever after. The same thing with Talia's and Snow's stories. They are living in the castle as the Queen's personal servants even though they are princesses to escape their terrible pasts.

I would love to know more about the Princesses and what brought them to where they are now. The hopes that future book will reveal more about them is enough to keep me reading this series. The second book is The Mermaid's Madness. A third book in the series, Red Hood's Revenge, will be released on July 6, 2010.
