Upcoming Release: Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

Hardcover: 336 pages
Publisher:
Hyperion Book CH (March 2, 2010)

Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.

By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.

As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

Book Review: Slave (The Cat Star Chronicles) by Cheryl Brooks

Mass Market Paperback: 320 pages
Publisher:
Sourcebooks Casablanca (April 1, 2008)

"I found him in the slave market on Orpheseus Prime, and even on such a god-forsaken planet as that one, their treatment of him seemed extreme."

He may be the last of a species whose sexual talents were the envy of the galaxy.

Cat is an enslaved warrior from a race with a feline gene that gives him awesome beauty, fearsome strength, and sensuality and sexual prowess unmatched by any other males in the universe. Even filthy, chained, and beaten, he gives off an aura of power and virility and his feline gene gives him a special aura.

Jacinth is an intergalactic trader on a rescue mission and she needs a man she can trust with her life.

She has spent years pursuing her kidnapped sister from planet to planet. Now her quest leads her to a place where all the women are slaves. "Jack" needs a slave of her own-one who can masquerade as her master.

Enmeshed in a tangle of deception, lust, and love, they must elude a race of violent killers and together forge a bond stronger than any chains.

Jacinth has been on a mission to rescue her sister for 6 years. She has finally caught up but the planet her sister is on is not one she can go to alone. Women are chained to the men (in fact, it is illegal for the men to NOT have a woman chained to him) and they are scantily clad. The men wear open shirts and pants that have a hole at the crotch to display their manhood (seriously). Jacinth needs a man she can trust to act as her owner because the only way she can look for her sister on the planet is if she goes as a slave.
She finds Cat (not his real name, it is her nickname for him) on a stinky planet at a slave auction. She ends up buying him and he agrees to help her out. He is not human, his species is like a hybrid of human and feline. Of course they hit it off and love each other. Things get a little kinky once they get to the planet.
Overall, the book was decent. I did roll my eyes a lot at Jacinth when she would say things like "Gee Whiz" or when she is coming on to Cat by calling him her big strong, brave, sexy Tomcat.....it was just a bit much. Cheesy and very unsexy. Not to say that there were no sexy parts, because there were...it's just that the author occasionally turned the mood (unintentionally I am sure) from hot and sexy to laughfest. The book was a quick read with adventure, sex, and some action. Decent enough that I would read the next one in the series just to see if the writing is a little better.
