Interview and Giveaway with Rachel Hawkins

Rachel Hawkins is the author of a great YA series about a girl named Sophie who is sent to a reform school for teens with powers (witches, vampires, shifters, etc.). When I read the first book, Hex Hall, I immediately fell in love with it. I was very excited to have the opportunity to review Rachel's second book in the series, Demonglass, which was just released on March 1st. My love for the series continues and I can't wait for the next book to come out! I was very fortunate that I was able to do a Q&A with Rachel, and here it is!

1) If you were to write a spin-off of the Hex Hall series, which character would you write about?

Well, I actually AM writing a spin-off of the Hex Hall series! :) And while I can't give too much away, I will say that the character is someone we don't meet until Book 3, and that she comes from a very different background that Sophie. Let's just say Prodigium aren't her favorite thing.

2) Would you rather be a demon, witch, vampire, or shapeshifter?

Oooh.... all 3 have advantages and drawbacks! I think I'd go with demon. Vamps can't go out in the sun (unless they have a bloodstone, obviously), and shifters have the Hair Issue. Sure, as a demon, I might freak out and destroy the world, but that's a risk I'm willing to take!

3) Sophie's best friend Jenna is a fanatic for the color pink, is that your favorite color too?

It soooo is, haha! I'd have an entirely pink bedroom if my husband didn't have to sleep in there, too!

4) What character has been the most difficult to write about?

Cal is always tough for me because he's so stoic and plays thing so close to the chest. There were so many times I wanted to give him a witty comeback and had to remind myself that no, Cal doesn't quip. I think he's tough because of all the characters, he's the furthest one from me.

5) What character has been the easiest or most fun to write about?

Sophie and Archer tie for that one! I think that's why I like writing them together so much. Their back and forth banter is so easy (and fun!) to write.

Thank you Rachel for taking the time to answer my questions!

All her life, Josselin Ancrum has been trained for combat, hoping to exact vengeance for her heroic mother, who was killed fighting the English. When asked to spy for the Scottish Queen, Jossy joyfully accepts. But when a handsome stranger rescues her from sudden danger, his charm distracts her from her mission.

On the surface, Drew MacAdam may appear to be nothing more than a carefree champion, but his heart harbors a dark secret: This Highland hero is actually a skilled English soldier with a hatred for war and for the Scottish. Yet from the moment he meets the feisty Jossy, he's captured by her fiercely loyal heart. He's determined the honey-haired lass will be his ultimate prize - until the tragedy of their entwined legacies is revealed. Are these star-crossed lovers to be divided by their pasts? Or will they be...seduced by destiny?

Highland Master by Amanda Scott

When eighteen-year-old Lady Catriona Mackintosh discovers a wounded man in the forest near her Highland home, little does she know that he has sworn a sacred oath to kill her father and other members of the powerful Highland confederation known as Clan Chattan. Nor does she realize that she has met her soul mate. Independent, competent, intelligent, fiercely proud of her heritage, determined always to live near her own family, and known to her family as the "wee wildcat" because of her quick temper, Catriona is the daughter of a Highland chieftain and granddaughter of the even more powerful Chief (or Captain) of Clan Chattan. But her life changes forever when she persuades Sir Finlagh Cameron to return with her to her home to recover from his wounds.

Sir Finlagh "Fin" Cameron is on a mission for the heir to Scotland's throne, who has sent him to the Highlands to persuade the Chief of Clan Chattan to arrange a secret meeting for him with two other great lords (the Lord of the Isles and the Lord of the North). Until Fin meets Catriona, however, he has no idea that her father was the Clan Chattan war leader who led them in the battle that wiped out many of Clan Cameron's best warriors, including Fin's own father. The sole survivor of that battle, Fin accepted a bequest of vengeance from his dying father, providing him with a dilemma to face as he begins to fall in love with Catriona. He is not the only one enticed by her charms, either. There are two other contenders, one of whom is his own master, the heir to Scotland's throne. With royal mischief afoot, if Catriona and Fin are ever to find happiness, they must first avoid disaster that could change Scotland's history, and find ways to be open and honest with each other.

SWORN TO REVENGE

All her life, Josselin Ancrum has been trained for combat, hoping to exact vengeance for her heroic mother, who was killed fighting the English. When asked to spy for the Scottish Queen, Jossy joyfully accepts. But when a handsome stranger rescues her from sudden danger, his charm distracts her from her mission.

SHROUDED BY SECRECY

On the surface, Drew MacAdam may appear to be nothing more than a carefree champion, but his heart harbors a dark secret: This Highland hero is actually a skilled English soldier with a hatred for war and for the Scottish. Yet from the moment he meets the feisty Jossy, he's captured by her fiercely loyal heart. He's determined the honey-haired lass will be his ultimate prize - until the tragedy of their entwined legacies is revealed. Are these star-crossed lovers to be divided by their pasts? Or will they be...
***********************************
Josselin is an impulsive and headstrong female. I often find these traits appealing in a heroine, but in this case I felt that she was always too quick to jump to conclusions and a bit naive about the intentions of others. I guess she just kind of rubbed me the wrong way so I never really felt any emotions towards her character. As for Drew, the Englishman masquerading as a golfing Highlander, I thought he was a bit uninteresting which was a surprise since he sounded like a unique and intriguing character at first. The description of the book makes it sound like the story is full of drama and adventure...it (sort of) is, but nothing heart pumping or jaw dropping. I think I just expected a little more. The story is not a bad one, it is just not a great one. Connecting with the characters is something very important for me and if I don't have that then I tend not to enjoy a story. I do think many people who enjoy historical romances would like this book, I just don't happen to be one of them.

3/5

I received a copy of this book for review from the publisher. Any opinions expressed are my own.
