Book Review: Steamed: A Steampunk Romance by Katie MacAlister

  • Paperback: 352 pages
  • Publisher: Signet; Original edition (February 2, 2010)
When one of Jack Fletcher's nanoelectromechanical system experiments is jostled in his lab, the resulting explosion sends him into the world of his favorite novel-a seemingly Victorian-era world of steampower, aether guns, corsets, and goggles. A world where the lovely and intrepid Octavia Pye captains her airship straight into his heart...

The story begins with Jack, who is a nanoelectrical systems engineer, and his sister Hallie hanging out in Jack's lab when there is some sort of freak accident that transports them to an alternate universe. They find themselves on an airship under the command of Captain Octavia Pye. Hallie gets arrested and will be hanged in honor of the emperor's wedding. Sparks fly between Jack and Octavia and they embark on a rescue mission to save Hallie.

Reviews/Ratings for this book seem to vary but I truly enjoyed this book. Quite a few people believed it was not Steampunk enough...to each their own. I thought it was Steampunk enough. The romance between Jack and Octavia was fun to watch, mostly because of the battle for dominance they seemed to have going on. The crew was intriguing. There wasn't much focus on them, so hopefully there will be more about them in the books to follow. The only character I felt disconnected with was Hallie, Jack's sister. I am going to chalk that up to the fact that she gets arrested early on so she really isn't in the book much.

4/5
